Speaker Bio:

Dr. Binghao Li is a research associate in the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems, The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Binghao obtained B.Sc. in Electrical & Mechanical Eng. from Northern Jiaotong University, P.R. China in 1994 and M.Sc. in Civil Eng., Tsinghua University, P.R. China in 2001. He received his Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia in 2006. His research area is new positioning technologies and network-RTK.

Seminar Outlines

Part 1: Introduction of SNAP, UNSW, Sydney, Australia

University of New South Wales (UNSW) is Australia's leading university. It has the largest engineering faculty in Australia. SNAP (Satellite Navigation and Positioning Group) in UNSW now has Australia's largest concentration of academic R&D in wireless, ground-based and satellite-based positioning technology and applications. Although the primary focus is Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as GPS, the School also has active research projects in inertial navigation systems, pseudolites, mobilephone and WiFi positioning, and integrated navigation and imaging systems. Research activity in the School is carried out by School staff and postgraduate students.

Part 2: The Introduction of RTK-GPS/GNSS

The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) has advantages never before offered by a GNSS. However, the signal point positioning can not provide very high accurate result. RTK (Real Time Kinematic) GPS is a technique by which carrier phase-based precise relative GPS positioning is carried out in a similar manner to Pseudorange based differential GPS. This technology provides a few centimeters of positioning accuracy if integer cycle ambiguities are correctly resolved. In this seminar, after a review of GPS, the principle of carrier phase-based positioning and ambiguity resolution are discussed. Then the RTK technology is introduced followed by the introduction of the continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) Network. Network-Based RTK especially the Virtual Reference Station (VRS) solution is discussed in detail. Finally, the future of GNSS-RTK is presented.
